On 9 February the Ayr and Alloway rink (Geoff Barber, Alan Richmond, Scott McAndrew and Paul Williams) were drawn against a Beresford Ladies’ rink skipped by Gillian Macdonald — with Katie Pieroni, Linda Wilson and Una Semple. Ayr and Alloway stole a single at the first end and then four in the second. For the ladies that must have seemed like a big hill to climb and that was a pity because they played exceptionally well and from there on the result always seemed, at least to our skip, to remain in doubt. That was especially so in the sixth end when we were desperately trying to guard a single on the pot lid with the ladies with the hammer and five of their stones surrounding our lone single. Happily for us we took a one in that end.

A final score of 8 to 5 seemed, and indeed was, conclusive, but except for the result in the second end there was very little difference between the teams.
